Satisfied?: Yes very satisfying.

Comments: You can quit rubbing your eyes, the price is correct - $3.80 for a fish and a half scoop! Provincial fish and chips doing it right! After not living in Whanganui for a while I wanted some local knowledge on the best chip shop atm so my dad suggested the New Fast Food shop around the corner from our family home. It's actually called New Fast Food and it's been there for years.
On arrival I noticed their shop sign humbly states "BEST IN WANGANUI". With these two opinions on board I have to say I was rather skeptical. Cruising around my old stomping ground I was flooded with pleasant memories and standing outside waiting for my order I was treated to waves of nostalgia.
The menu was painted silver with fancy hand lettering in black chisel tip vivid. The specials menu was printed out twice, there was a soft toy claw arcade machine and the rugby played on a flat screen tv above the smorgasbord Chinese food. The shop had a pretty decent turnover but my order didn't take very long at all.
The chips were probably some of the best in the game in all aspects. Crunchy exterior thru to a creamy middle, the bang and hang was off the hook and they weren't dried out like over hung chips can get. The finger grease and waxy mouth feel was non-existent and they were seasoned perfectly. The fish was fresh and moist with the right amount of crunch in the crispy golden batter. The batter to fish ratio was also golden. This would have been perfect 5's across the board but even though the fish seemed large it was a quite thin, however, I guess paying $3.80 a thicker fillet might have been asking for a bit much. Where this meal lacked it most definitely made up for in nostalgia as I sat in the family home and watched The Fifth Element. Great to end these reviews on a positive high. Thanks for reading!

Well drained of oil?: Yes
Satisfied?: I'm full and lethargic.

Comments: I simply asked for a fish and a half scoop. I thought this would be a straight forward request. However, this was met with the question of which fish I would like from the ott list on the wall (75% of which were unavailable). I was next asked which of the 5 different chip options I would like. I feel like this place over complicates itself for no reason. If I want a specific cut of fish or beer batter fries I'd hit u up if they're available. You don't have to prove anything, it's just fish and chips. Just chill k.
Once I had let this go and finish rolling my eyes, I find out they don't offer a half scoop. I felt the tension build in my shoulders as I responded "ok just a scoop then thanks" with an empty smile, a skill I had naturally picked up from years of working in hospitality. As I leaned in to pay with paywave, the FOH staff changed as the first guy goes off to do something more important so I had to repeat my order. That's fine. Then she said "$17.80" and it's at that point where I had utterly given up any hope in this place, while at the same time a corrupt Sound Garden mp3 played over the stereo.
The wait time was a lot shorter than I expected and it was nice to see that the fish gets rested in paper towels to remove excess oil. Unboxing revealed a powerful amount of chips, as one would expect at this price range from a fish shop but it seemed like they were double the amount of chips that one person would need. If only there were some sort of way around this issue. Some way to only order half of that amount. Hmmmm.
I took the huge amount as an unspoken challenge and worked my way through the lot with the exception of a few green chips that I didn't trust enough to grant access to inside my body. It was a struggle but I got there eventually. As I made my way thru the mountain of fries, the number of fries I ate which were still raw in the middle began to increase exponentially to the point where I was eventually left with a box full of uncooked fries.
The fish was a fair size and chunky and even though the batter ratio was bang on it was unfortunately doughy in areas. I'm partial to Moki but it became quite rich after a while.
I dunno about this place. Gentrifying hood food is bull shit and when you can walk up to Cuba St and get better quality for $10 cheaper I guess I have to tell it like it is - this place fucking sucks so much.

Satisfied?: Did it full me up? - No way haha. However, it was pleasing to the eye, nose and mouth.

Comments: In b4 saying this isn't fish and chips. In b4 saying this is a fish meal. This has two of the main components of fish and chips - fish and potato.
The potato was thick cut and oven cooked. They were cooked to perfection in olive oil and swimming in a tomato vinaigrette. I'm a sucker for snapper and this was a very thick and juicy fillet. Lightly crumbed with a lemon and thyme crust and topped with a lashing of taramosalata and some type of sprout (sorry this isn't sprout reviews, so I have no idea what that is.. alfalfa or some such). This plate was very decadent and flavoursome. V bougie. Savoured every mouthful not only due to the sophistication and subtleties of this meal but also due to the tiny portion size and high price tag. I didn't really feel comfortable taking a finger grease reading in this environment. Still hungry afterwards, we ordered a bowl of fries for desert which the rich wankers on the tables surrounding us scoffed at while drinking their buttery Chardonnay.

Comments: This chip shop had a real nice mom design aesthetic. Purple, black and orange colour scheme with very neat handwriting on the menu blackboard and hand drawn cloud borders around everything. Fairy lights in the window and the notice board has two notices - one of which is advertising for their own shop. Visually this place was SO SICK.
The chips were near perfect only they were ever so slightly under cooked. The fish was probably the biggest fish I've had. Thick and juicy, it fell to bits but was tasty. I'm unsure if I had batter fatigue or I just got full because it was so huge. So much food and well seasoned these were the perfect economy class fish and chips if you are hungas and on a budget.

Satisfied?: Yeah... alright.

Comments: This is a little 'to go' chip shop in the New World Thorndon car park that drive past every week while doing deliveries for work. So I thought I'd have a look. Nice clean environment. Crisp and modern with swirly GVC logo font (soz I didn't get a pic). The chips would have been perfect if they were cooked a little longer as most were raw in the middle. The fish was also under cooked with a sludge layer between the flesh and batter surface. The fish wasn't drained of oil too well and it got me greasy and unable to finish the last few bites. Overall portion size was great and it was well seasoned but this would only be a place I'd recommend to my enemies.

Satisfied?: Still pretty hungas

Comments: First up the faux vintage chairs in the waiting area are sick with gold Chinese fabric covered in clear plastic, they kinda look like they weren't properly unwrapped after being bought. The nostalgic Street Fighter II arcade machine is a feature often overlooked in modern chip shops, so I'm glad places like this are still holding it down. The menu board was a clever combination of vinyl lettering and areas of black chalk board paint for rotating menu items and specials.
They were a hold out with the chips and although they started out really nice, they got hard and tough to swallow as they cooled. They weren't just parboiled, they were fully double cooked and dried out to heck. The fish was a pretty fair size - it was real chunky and cooked v nicely but it was so drenched in oil that my hand looked like it was covered in the same plastic wrap as their tacky seating. I mean... these were okaaaaayyy - seasoning was great and all that but these guys are TOTAL HOLDOUTS! I'm still real hungas ay

Satisfied?: Kind of underwhelmed.

Comments: so a regular at my work told me about this place and raved about it so I thought I should investigate. There was roadworks going on outside the shop and everyone seemed super confused because it's a weird shaped intersection where like 5 roads meet. The shop is tiny and run down and has posters stuck all over the place. The light box menu board has a big hole smashed into it. It seemed like a layer of dust covers everything in the shop including the two other customers I had to climb over to get to the eftpos machine. The chips were pretty much deep fried crisps and since they were home cut the size varied and the big chips were under cooked. They got super hard as they cooled and left lingering old potato, dirt, and bitter flavours in my mouth. I was even treated to bug holes in some of the chips. The fish was a fair size and the flesh was thick. Due to it being cooked at a high heat the exterior had a nice crunch but inside was real doughy. I have wax mouth and feel a bit bummed but on the brighter side, that view of the harbour when you head back down to tinakori road is stunning ay?

Well drained of oil?: Not bad
Satisfied?: Not really. I'm full but true satisfaction depends on more than just a full gut.

Comments: Well. I was really hoping this one would be good. The walls were covered in fake wood grain panels, there were two NZ commercial fish posters, a poster of a skydiver riding a surfboard real high up and there was one of those tiny windows through to the back room with the vertical one way mirror stripes. The menu was chaotic mix of pro vinyl lettering and crude blue chisel tip vivid and there was a plastic vine in a green planter hanging from the corner of the room.
The chips started off ok but the more I ate, the less I wanted to eat them. They were home cut fries and cooked to the point where the bigger chips were cooked through to the middle but the smaller chips were burnt. I suspect that they were machine peeled or perhaps just poorly handled as a lot of the chips had a slightly sour bruised potato flavour. They had more of a chew than a crunch and became exponentially chewier and harder to swallow as they cooled. The fish seemed plump at first but with my first bite I realised it was just bulked out with flour-heavy batter. It was under cooked and felt like you were just eating bland dough and had a gooey mash potato consistency inside. Over all it was a poorly seasoned, poorly cooked, flavourless gut filler and I think I'm gonna be gummed up for days.

Satisfied?: Yeah full af. I feel great!

Comments: Well after paying $18 for some potato and sea meat, I gotta say I felt pretty skeptical initially. The restaurant was empty, the decor a little tacky, Coldplay was playing on the stereo and I always feel a bit cautious about a place that refers to itself as a bistro. By time my order reached the table (which was not very long) quite a few people had filtered in. It seemed like everyone in the room gasped as my hefty meal arrived and the woman to the left of me even said "I'll have what he's having" in the most corny way imaginable. My first chip (Coldplay still playing) came with everything I look for in a chip - perfect crunch, creamy interior, large quantity, bang and hung like a pro and it was even seasoned with paprika! The fish was TWO massive Hoki fillets. The flesh was juicy and thick with a nice thin layer of crunchy batter. The oil drainage of the fish was also top notch. The added extras of giant side salad, tartare and tomato sauce really set it off and the wedge of lemon was pleasant to finish on. I'm going to go ahead and say they are the best quality fish and chips I have reviewed in Wellington so far. Even though the price was up there, I rationalised it by considering that the quantity was double the amount of my normal chip shop order plus the higher quality and all of the added extras. I feel like it was a relatively good deal. The guy behind the fryer knows what's up.

Comments: I got introduced to this place by my friend Kerry Ann Lee and it has become easily one of my favorite places to eat in Wellington. It's so unassuming and has some of the best Chinese food I've had here. Hefty portion sizes and intense flavours, they do nothing to pander to the bland western palette or "kiwi hot" clientele when it comes to their traditional dishes. I loved my experience tonight tho - a guy on my left eating a literal platter of steak eggs and chips and a woman on my right coughing the entire time and spitting into a napkin as master chef plays on the wall tv behind me. I hate that show with all my might but somehow it worked and set a nice mood. The chips in my meal were plentiful and I'm highly certain they were Mr Chips brand fries as they brought back memories of getting a cup of chips at the demolition derby when I was a kid. The interior was creamy mash and crunchy exterior but I'm gonna say maybe a little too hard probably due to the fryer oil being too hot. The oil drainage of the chips was on point tho ay! The fish was a real good sized cut of shark however quite thin and quite oily with a puffy wonton batter coating. Batter ratio was on point tho. Insane good value and well seasoned with the added bonus of a squirt of sauce if u dine in but def keep on the Chinese menu tho.

Comments: I noticed this place when I reviewed the neighbouring fish and chips shop a few weeks back. The decor is amazing! A lot of Navy and azure paint and objects everywhere. It has a real cluttered Mom Interior Design meets Football Hooligan aesthetic. My favourite piece was a cheap A2 stretched canvas painted using a big house painting brush and a minimal amount of blue paint. The food tho... Chips were pretty under cooked and for some reason they eventually made my tongue numb. At a guess I'd say McCain fries and for a professionally prepared chip, the exterior had barely any crunch and the middle was dense raw potato. The fish looked promising as heck - it was a chunky piece and the colour seemed great. This first impression was quickly shattered onto the floor into a million pieces after my first bite. The batter was thicc and my mouth was full of barely cooked dough and flavourless mush. I was trying to pick the fish type based on its flavour profile but it tasted like nothing. The meal was perfectly seasoned, cheap and prob the best bang and hang in Wellington so far! I still feel hungry so might need a second dinner.

Comments: This place was recommended to me a while back by Apa Hutt which is quite bold considering how brutally honest I can be but I'm pleased to announce that this place is coooool! The super lovely Maori and Chinese ladies behind the counter were an unlikely duo who knew exactly what they were doing back there. Swiftly maneuvering around each other in the small cooking space it was like watching some sort of contemporary fish and chips version of the Rush Hour movie. The menu was a chaotic mix of hand rendered, sticker and paper printed fonts all over the place next to a NZ Commercial Fish poster and there was a sick mermaid painting hidden in the corner. The chips were chunky home cut fries and normally I'm not huge on thick fries due to the center usually being under cooked and bland. These were parboiled before being deep fried which made them mostly creamy in the middle but due to the irregular shape, the big chips were ever so slightly under cooked but were otherwise great! The fish was quite batter heavy but since it was cooked so well, this was actually a good thing and gave it a decent amount of crunch. Very tasty, fresh and a great size. Everything was well seasoned, great bang & hang and fair priced. My mouth is a little waxy and I'm feeling 'adult full' - I could totally eat more but I have eaten enough and shouldn't have any more and not be a greedy guts.

Comments: I had high hopes for this shop. I had been told good things about it. The walls were fake marble and the menu was hand rendered in red vivid. It all went south when I asked to use the bathroom and he told me to use the bathroom across the road at KFC. I felt a bit weird about going to a takeaways store just to use the bathroom. I reserve that sort of spontaneous loo use for public toilets and gas stations so I just held on until I reached the place where I'd eat. The chips were severely under cooked and really dense. The surface had a soft crunch thru to a raw potato center. Fish was heavy on the batter and way under cooked. Everything was pretty hard to swallow but I guess their bang and hang and seasoning was on point. My lips are itchy.

Comments: Great value. This shop was awkward to be in and no one uttered a word as the droning of the extractor fan whirled in the background. The chips were not bad and the quantity was pretty fair for $2 but the surface texture was a little waxy. Sadly they were the only positive thing about the meal. The fish was a fair size but it sucked so much. The batter ratio was super batter heavy and doughy and under cooked. The flesh was chewy and was pretty bland. Meh. Best part about this shop is the name imo. SIIIIIICK oil drainage tho!

Comments: I've got the work vehicle over the weekend so I used this opportunity to explore a chip shop outside of my daily routine and thought I'd see what's up in the Miramar side of town. Google told me that the highest scoring review (due to zomato) was Strathmore Fish Shop. Here I go again - taking advice from goodness knows who online who probably have completely no idea when it comes to fish and chips. We've had millions of years of growing and evolving as a species and zomato is the best resource we got for analysing fish shops in the area ffs. This shop had seen better days but one redeeming feature was that one of the walls was all mirror so it felt like you were inside a strange dive chippery/power lifting gym mash up. The chips were a v generous half scoop but the first mouthful came with a subtle overtone of deep fried pork and the rest of the meal had an animal fatty mouthfeel and flavour. I'll take a punt and say they're Mr Chips brand chips and although they appeared well cooked and there was a good crunch to them, the interior of the chips was dense and kind of hard to digest which may be why I feel really full. The fish was not huge but it had a bit of girth to it and would have been a solid 4/5 if they had let it to fry for a little longer as it was doughy in areas. Overall it wasn't amazing but I don't feel oily so that's something I guess.

Comments: This place is pretty stark - Complete with a new print of the NZ Commercial Fish Species poster, white fluorescent lighting, depressed gold fish in a small tank and one of those Giggle™ TV sets that plays low res viral vids and local company advertising. Customer rapport was not their strong suit which I can appreciate. I'm here to get dinner not make a new best bud. There were so many chips! Impressive for a half scoop! A lot of places don't even get close to this amount with their Full Scoops. Only to be let down by a very not great bang and hang, dry mouthfeel and some of the chips were pushed a little too dark and bruised. The fish was a great size lemon fish but the batter ratio was a little batter heavy and it was under cooked and doughy. Overall it wasn't bad - oil tasted fresh, there was a bonus slice of tangy lemon, everything was well seasoned and it was good value. I'm full but I feel like I just pashed someone with lip gloss on.

Comments: This place! What a pleasant surprise! Amazing first impressions: I tried to call but their number listed online was disconnected, they had not only one but TWO NZ commercial fish species posters, the interior seemed untouched since the 60s/70s complete with faux discoloured marble walls and as I went to pay for my order the woman behind the counter apologised for not having EFTPOS as they are cash only. HAHA. The turnover of customers was insane, their tiny store was completely packed but I only had to wait around 5 or so minutes for my order. The chips were delicious home-cut crinkle fries and plentiful. Maybe more suited to those who prefer soft flaccid chips - ideal if you live with someone who suffers from misophonia but there were heaps of lil crunchies sprinkled through there FYI. The fish was a deece cut of lemon fish and cooked very well. Nothing fancy but it was chunky, great batter colour and batter ratio was on point. Overall they were well seasoned and oil drainage so good that I didn't even feel like I needed to wash up after smashing them. It feels good to finally get some good shark and tatties! Feel good yo! Feel good! Gtg I'm listening to Adina Howard's new album Resurrection for the first time rn and this album GOING TF INNN!

Comments: So I say to my friend Chris (Power Nap/Golden Axe/Future Sport), I says, "What's a good place for fnc in Auckland CBD?". He gives me a list so I choose somewhere close to the venue I'm rocking tf out at tonight. Turns out Ponsonby Fresh Fish and Chips was across the road so that was the go. The light box outside proclaimed that they were the best fish and chips in Auckland for a few years running. The decor was dive chipper/shabby chic with a classic commercial fish poster on the wall and a hand rendered menu on a chalk board. These guys seemed like they had their shit down as they took out an infrared spot temperature gauge every so often to read the fryer temp. The fish was cooked in a completely different stand alone fryer to the chips. One thing that didn't aid to my incognito status was that my buddy Apa Hutt decided for whatever reason that he should inform the guys behind the counter that I was a fish and chips reviewer from Wellington. This got my metaphorical knickers In a twist but I reassured them that in fact I was only a normal person but I'm unsure if they bought it as they laughed at me after saying so. The chips were cooked to perfection and quite possibly the best I have had in my time as a fish and chips reviewer, however, the quantity was laughable and the oil content was quite substantial. The fish was a good colour grade but for a $5 piece it was oily and quite obviously an old and veiny cut with a rather muddy, metallic and bloody flavour profile. Overall it was very underwhelming and I feel like I dipped my head and hands into a puddle of diesel oil. On a lighter note at least they were very well seasoned and there was a nice fresh wedge of lemon to help break down the wax mouth

Comments: So I have been obsessed with this chip shop for months when I found out about it and google image searched it. The pics of dudes serving u with backwards hats on and the words WASSUP and PRIMO in the shop name seemed like a dream come true. It is with great disappointment that I have to report to you that Wassup Primo Fish and Chips has fallen far from what their web presence will lead you to believe. There were definitely an above average amount of chips for a half scoop and the center was nice and soft most of the time but the exterior was hard and plasticky. The fish was large but it was a doughy, thin, shitty precooked fillet which absorbed a lot of oil. They didn't bang and hang for nearly long enough, the decor wasn't "totally vertical", no one hi fived me or had a wallet chain and I feel like I need a top half shower. This blows, dude. This joint was totally bogus, dude.

Comments: I thought I'd try the competition to Nanking Takeaways in Brooklyn (from my review a couple of weeks ago) to see if Zomato was correct in giving the Brooklyn Fish Supply a higher score. In my very honest opinion, Nanking is far superior. The chips here are good but they were pushed a little too hard in the deep fryer to the point where a lot of chips had hollowed out and their creamy center replaced with chip oil. The good chips were good and there was a decent quantity but it was just those few unruly maverick chips that sent shivers down my spine as they burst in my mouth. The fish was the chunkiest fillet I think I have ever had! It was massive and cooked to perfection, however, it was drenched in oil and since they also deal in Chinese food, the oil gave the fish an old wanton meat finish. I couldn't eat all of the batter. Overall it was seasoned well with standard table salt and I don't have a belly full of regret but I'm quite greasy so I need a hose off. So there u have it, kids - don't believe everything you read on the internet.

Comments: Local legend Boss Christ took me and my entourage to his fav neighbourhood chip shop and let me tell you what - it did not disappoint! The level of customisation to your order was intense and their quirky names for their burgers and hot chips topping add ons were funny as ay. Upon purchasing I was given the option of normal salt, chicken salt, garlic salt and lemon pepper. I opted for garlic salt. The chips were incredible and cooked perfectly! Nice bit of bite through to that desired creamy center. The fish was very lengthy and the batter was the right ratio and colour grade. Very enjoyable but it did make my fingers a little tacky but made up for it with the flavour. I'm feeling nice and ready to rock in Palmy tonight! Wish me luck!
