Comments: So this new shop opened a few months back around the corner from our house but I have been putting it off so that they could iron out their systems and give them time to get it all right. I have to be honest, I came into this place expecting it to be average at best and was ready to give it a shit review, but I’ll tell you what - this was right up there! I feel like the chipperies back home could learn a lot from this place. Unfortunately, they only offer a set menu type of deal so I couldn’t order my usual fish and half scoop, but given the quantity and quality of everything I’m willing to overlook this minor detail.
The chips would be what I’d consider to be up there with the best I’ve ever had. Nice crunch and substance to them, I would draw similarities to that of New Zealand chip experts like Cuba St’s Wellington Seamarket and Newtown’s Fish Fins etc. They were well seasoned and flavoursome with a sprinkling of paprika. Not dry to cause indigestion and not oily to trigger the gag reflex. Cooked just the way they should be.
The fish was a very generous slab of pink salmon which I thought was very interesting but could potentially run the risk of becoming too rich. Im happy to report that it was incredible to the very last bite. The batter was lightly applied and crispy and the bottom of the fish still had the skin on and was barely battered as to act as a type of salmon crackle. Tender and juicy, these guys weren’t playing around.
Added extras were a green leaf side salad with a plumb dressing, a ramekin of tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon. Upon delivery of the meal we were offered an array of free sauces but there was really no need. 0% finger grease and even though I only drunk water with the meal there was no waxy mouth feel. I feel great and I’ll be back. Damn.
