I've had a real run of interesting fish shops. This week's fish and chip shop also doubles as a Thai food takeout. I had a sneak peek at their Thai food a few days prior and can confirm that side of the menu is pretty great!
The chips are not your run of the mill Mr Chips brand but instead they've made the bold decision to go with McCain fries. After this experience I would go as far to say that I prefer them over Mr Chips. The perfect crunch through to the soft creamy filling. The perfect bang and hang. Perfectly seasoned. Aaahh McCain, you've done it again.
The house fish was Moki and I enjoyed every mouthful. It was one of those fish that forces your eyes close from satisfaction. Nice golden crust through to juicy flesh. Simply climactic!
I know this is the first place I've reviewed since I have moved back but I'm calling it early and gonna say this is the best place in Whanganui. Change my mind.

Comments:
I chose this shop as it was handy to get to from the place we were staying (Ozanam House). If you know anyone who has anything to do with Ozanam House or has helped/donated to them, these people are absolute angels and the service they offer will blow you away if you or anyone you love are ever in a position to need it.
Hospital Fish shop is yet another interesting dual cuisine combo - they offer a straight forward Fish and Chips menu but also try to specialise in sushi. Although it did seem like their "sushi" was probably limited to teriyaki chicken maki rolls and probably pretty shit, it never occurred to me that Fish and Chips is the perfect combination for sushi. Fish and chip shops are already half way there, you just need to not cook the fish and hey presto, it's sushi. Why isn't this already a big thing?
This shop was falling apart at the seams to be real with you but I loved the attitude of the guy behind the counter. The type of guy who talks to you as though you haven't seen each other in forever. Maybe he's right, it has been a forever amount of time since we last saw each other. Maybe.
The chips were plentiful but quite a bit under done. Cooked at a high heat in an attempt to cut down the cooking time. This left the surface texture bubbly and made them harden as they cooled.
The fish was a nice cut of Warehou but I think the oil was old and gave everything a really strange quality. Everything was oily but not oily at the same time. I don't really know what was going on.
I don't know how I feel about this place.

Comments:
I saw this shop as I was on my way to stay the night at my sister's house in Ashhurst. At a glance I thought it was called "The Empty Takeaways" which was funny but the actual name of the place makes just as much sense. What does a nest have to do with anything? Why does the fact that it's empty somehow link to Fish and Chips?
As I arrived the smell of garam masala met me up the street guiding me all the way to the register. To my surprise, this fish and chip shop also does takeaway Indian food. A combination I have yet to have seen until now.
The chips were a pretty big disappointment. Not only were they a low quantity, they were cooked in that way where all you're left with is the empty shell of a chip. I am thankful that they allowed them to drain of oil otherwise they would have been a very hard pass from me. Points also deducted for the bruised chip that also made their way into my small pile. Even my hot chip connoisseur nephew who was present only gave them a 4/10 I think.
The fish was nothing to get excited about. It was a slightly below average size piece of Rig. On a brighter note it was cooked half decent and didn't have any muddiness to it.
I get it, in the economic climate we're experiencing in New Zealand companies have to be adaptable and offer products that people want in order to stay afloat. Good on them for trying to hustle.
I hear their Indian menu is supposed to be pretty good though.

Comments:
I was having a laugh about this road the other day. At some point it changes from Carrington St to Carrington Road. I don't know why or where the change occurs and I have just come to terms with the fact that most things road related in New Plymouth don't have to make any sense at all. It's like the city planner is just 2 kids piggybacking in a trench coat pretending to be a grown-up.
Our first choice for tonight's review was a place called Lobster Pot but it seems the phone number listed online has changed so we couldn't get through. Next choice was Kingfish and after placing the order the woman on the other end said that will be a 10 minute wait. I took that with the same grain of salt I had taken with other 10 minute waiters who had always grossly under estimated wait times. It's Friday night. She's dreaming.
I arrived 11 minutes after the call had ended, their blue and yellow signage welcoming me with the aesthetic of a plumbing shop. There it was - my order waiting in their pie warmer draw and the girl on the register had already rung it up. I can't have been in the store for more than half a minute. They were so efficient that I had no time to bask in the ambience. Walking back to the car I had no idea what Kingfish looked like inside and I thought to myself, "What just happened?".
As I ate the chips I started to figure out the secrets behind their 10 minute wait time. All of the puzzle pieces started to fall into place. The bubbly surface texture, the light colour grading, the lack of structural integrity. They had their fryer cranking on a high heat which they thought would cut down on development time so they could process their orders at a higher rate. The forgiving brand of chips they use gave them a little leeway as they are parboiled but this rushed approach left them undercooked and oily. I was also faced with having to eat a few bruised chips which is never a great time.
The fish was the old trick where you give the illusion of a big slice of fish but fillet it thinly. While this cut of Warehou itself tasted delicious, it too was also not given enough time to drip off excess oil.
They had all the right ingredients to be a very good shop, their flaws just lie in their want to offer very fast fast-food. A few minutes added to their wait time for the sake of more quality control is not going to bleed any customers but how thing are going I know I won't be back.

Satisfied?: I'm absolutely stuffed. I had a nap before writing this.

Comments:
I became a dad 5 days ago so this review is dedicated to my new son Mohi. I was absolutely honoured to have him with me for his first Fish and Chips Friday out in this new strange world. He slept through the whole thing and he probably didn't really care but hopefully some day he will come to appreciate this fish and chip journey I've embarked on. Maybe he will figure out why I have chosen to write these reviews. Maybe he will even find some of this information useful. Maybe that was the reason all along, to pass on these snapshots through my timeline so the next generation can learn, adapt and improve the quality of fish and chips so that we may live in harmony in a reality where all chip shops are perfect 20 scores.
Frankleigh Takeaways was covered in black and white print outs of meal deals, special items and an announcement that dogs can't go inside the shop. My mind went to a place where they once had wayyy too many dogs in the store which made them resort to printing a sign.
The shop had a line out the door. All customers were quite a bit later in life with the youngest easily being in his 70s. This led me to believe that they would probably over season their chips so that any semblance of flavour may be able to reach the dimmed boomer flavour receptors of their clientele.
I was very wrong.
The Mr Chip's brand chips were lush and creamy. Not a bruised potato in sight. So moreish that if I had an endless supply, I would have a hard time knowing when to stop. Maybe I wouldn't stop.
The fish, a massive meaty cut of Warehou which tasted as fresh as an onshore breeze during spring. I think this was the best piece of Warehou I've had and the batter was fried at an optimum time and temperature. Absolute bliss.
Frankleigh Takeaways was well in the league of the perfect 20s at a price tag that will stop you from forgetting your roots (6.60). Quite frankly, it was delicious and my first review as a dad would not be complete if I hadn't used that terrible pun.

Satisfied?:
I had a light lunch and I was still bloated after this meal.

Comments:
At this point it just kind of feels like fish and chips shop owners in Taranaki are taking the piss when it comes to naming these places. Rumpty's!? What sort of oil are these people frying?
The wackiness didn't end there - the interior design was like an architecture school text book thrown into a blender. Roman columns, vegas motel colour scheme, a castle/pizza oven style archway and an angular brick counter that extruded into the middle of the room with bank teller perspex screens and a pink formica bench top. The register LCD price screen reads "NOSALE" throughout the entire transaction. The menu board was an explosive clusterfuck of varying A4 papers and bits of tape which would take the better half of a day to navigate through to gain a full understanding of what they had on offer.
Their chips were a hearty batch of the local crowd pleasing Mr Chip's brand and they were cooked beautifully. Nice crunch on the exterior through to a creamy inner. Seasoned perfectly and not trying to reinvent the wheel, just keeping them tried and true which I can respect.
The fish was on the slightly disappointing side. For a town with a port you can easily be lead to believe that you're in for good sized fresh fish wherever you go. Sadly this isn't the reality most of the time. This fish was pretty thinly sliced and there were a few undesirable flavours which had me curious how long it had taken to get from sea to plate. At the very least the batter was quite tasty and cooked quite skillfully which showed the cook obviously did the best with what he had to work with.
Over all, I think this fuzzy 80s acid trip of a fish and chip shop is the place to visit if you have a hankering for a chip butty.

This street has three fish and chip shops within about a 100m radius. Pretty much all next to each other. Two of which I have reviewed in the past (Westown Fish Supplies & Flying Dragon Takeaways) and they hadn't really measured up. They were both powerfully average and forgettable which was strange considering how much competition they have nearby. With that in mind, I had a quick glance of their google review ratings and found Lucky Horse had the lowest rating of the three which didn't give me much hope. I chose to take one for the team and review this shop on my own in fear of it being a complete failure. Boy was I in for a big surprise!
The chips had the perfect creamy mouth feel with an array of crunchy bits hidden underneath. They were that scoop that make you rock back and forth in time to a beat that isn't there while you eat them.
To put things into perspective, that fish was about the size of my entire face. It was a delicious cut of Warehou with a meaty texture similar to a chicken breast. The only thing letting it down was that the batter was ever so slightly under cooked. Had it been given a bit more time to develop this meal would have shined with the best of the best but it's miles ahead of it's close competitors.
The Chinese fast food area of the store was absolutely humming and seems to be their focus. It was like one of those NZ Chinese Fish and chip shops you've seen a million times before but they've really polished the concept. Like a chain with only one store or a parody of itself. Topped off with a set of fake brown leather staff room chairs in the waiting area.

Again with the names of these places in New Plymouth! I love it. Just do whatever you want. Just call it whatever.
But seriously though, Stockys was amazing. Hands down the best I've had since I moved back.
Being greeted by their signage from a mile away was a real treat. A massive fish in the style of small town NZ metal art. The decor had a nice feminine flair which is not really what I was expecting to walk into with a name like Stockys. It felt like I was picking up food from a Briscoes show room.
The reviews online rave about the Stockys burgers and it was one of those moments where my standard order of a fish and a scoop felt like a curse.
As soon as I opened my wrapped meal I let out massive "WHOOOOOOA". The quantity of chips unlike anything I had ever seen. The first thing that came to mind is that I wanted to see what tool they were using to scoop this massive load. They were such an absolute delight to eat that I ate every last one of them.
The house fish was a suuuuper chunky piece of Rig and it too was a pleasure to eat. Every mouthful better than the last.
All of the staff are happy chipper women and you can see there is some serious organisation and systems going on back stage. Apparently the area near it are the rough parts of New Plymouth but I would definitely risk getting a punch in the face for this experience again.

Comments:
From the moment I heard the name of this place I had high hopes for it. Terry's. It's brilliant.
Got a bit of a back story on Terry too. Apparently he started this shop back in the day and it was the place to stop on the way home from the pubs. Eventually Terry got sick of working his magic behind the fryer and took on a new career as a bus driver. The spirit of Terry lives on in the New Plymouth Fish and chips scene as the shop carries his name to this day.
The layout of this shop was cool. The counter extended the entire length of the tiny store with standing room only. An uncle standing behind a functioning bain marie looking pleased with himself trying to get a smile from anyone who would make eye contact with him. A wall of fizzy drinks surrounding him like stain glass windows was mesmerizing.
They didn't muck around. They were heaving and the super polite young fella behind the counter already knew which was our phone order and pretty much started ringing it up on the register before we had said anything. Super efficient.
The fish was flawless. A nice meaty chunk of Warehou cooked to perfection and dusted with the right amount of table salt.
The chips on the other hand left more to be desired. My nephew likes to think of himself as a bit of a hot chips connoisseur and said he'd score them a 6 out of 10 and I have to agree with him. They were a bit bruised and beaten and the cook hadn't given them enough love in the fryer. A bit wobbly. A bit flaccid.
I really wish I could call Terry's my go to spot but the chips were a bit of a flat tire if I'm gonna be honest.

Comments:
The thing I love about telling people that I review fish and chips is how everyone comes out of the wood work to let me know the best places in town that simply can't be missed. Merriland's Takeaways was one of those places. We had extended family joining us for dinner so I thought it would be safe to take a punt on one of the shops from my recommendation list.
It was off to a bit of an undie ripping start when their address on Google maps sent us on a wild goose chase. The location marker falsely said it was among a cluster of kit set houses. This first impression was soured again when we arrived at the actual store after the time stated over the phone only to see our order hadn't been cooked yet.
While waiting for everything to cook, I took in my surroundings. The pseudo Mediterranean colour palette of pastel yellow, red and pale blue combined with wild west slab serif fonts, golden waving cats and a goofy cartoon fish mascot gave me mixed emotions. Feelings of confusion. It was one of those things you just have to give up trying to make sense of.
The serving size of the fish and chips for this price bracket were quite impressive so I definitely wasn't left hungry.
The fish was a girthy piece of Warehou and the application of the batter was pretty good. However, it wasn't cooked at an optimum temperature which left it doughy in some parts and pockets of oil which popped in my mouth and sent shivers down my spine. Also there were a few mouthfuls of metallic muddiness thrown in for good measure.
The chips were dry hollowed out sticks which would have been impossible to digest without a beer.
In hindsight it seems like the Google maps blunder was the universe sending me a message. You'd have a higher chance of getting amazing fish and chips wherever that pin was located.

Comments:
As their name suggests, this food was definitely fast. I placed my order over the phone and it can't have taken me more than 8 minutes door to door but I arrived to find my food ready and waiting under a heat lamp.
This store was a visual overload. Menus upon menus, 3 coke fridges in a row and a screen playing channel 2 super loud. To the left of the counter was a dining room full of red velvet chairs to enjoy their western style Chinese menu. The woman working solo in the empty store was straight to the point and wasn't there to chitchat. As soon as I had paid for my meal she basically ran off to restock the coke fridge.
The chips were at a quantity unlike I have ever seen before. I had to tap out. There was no way I was going to fit that all inside my body or want to for that matter. A combination of bruised potato and fryer temp being too high left these chips hard outside and dusty on the inside. They digested slow and had the same mouth drying quality of a slice of quince.
The fish was a slice of lemon fish and the filet itself was pretty decent. They tried to lift it with a tiny wedge of lemon but the doughy under cooked batter brought it crashing back down.
The person cooking these was all thumbs and I'm glad I visited this shop alone so no one else had to go through this. Another one for the "Don't bother" pile.

Comments:
This shop came up as a recommendation from a friend after last week's review as it's in the same part of town as Parklands Takeaways.
It got off to a rocky start. Even though we phoned ahead and arrived at the time stated over the phone, they blatantly started cooking the fish and chips after we arrived. It's Friday night so I thought I'd give them a pass on that. We probably missed the rush and they're probably still reeling from it('scuse the pun).
The branding was your typical job by a self taught provincial design company. Big heavy fonts, a stark heavy duty color palette with the awkward addition of a cartoony burger mascot doing the thumbs up or something. A TV blaring some painful current events comedy show with Jeremy Crobet or whatever the hell his name who was absolutely bombing. Revealing how out of touch he is by unearthing the Karen meme as though it's still relevant. Covid19 ads play in between while no one in the store wears a mask. A mandatory commercial fish poster hovering in the corner and the deep fryers hidden out the back of the shop in a different room while I'm curious what they're doing back there. The way the kid working the register squinted at us left me wondering if he was just being an angsty teen or if he desperately needed an eye examination. We also have to talk about the weird unused cabinets next to the counter with AstroTurf in them because I have no idea what that's about. They almost seemed like cold cases for fresh fish but why the AstroTurf? I don't get it.
The chips were an incredible take on what seems to be the town favorite - Mr Chip's brand chips. Probably the best batch of them I've had in terms of fry time and temp. The balance of the crispy bite through to creamy center was like a starch filled dream. A potato sonata so delicate and well conducted but never reaching the full cescendo you were hoping for because they rushed the oil drainage before dumping them into the news print. Like a lover getting an important business call right before you climax.
The Warehou filet, while also slightly drenched in oil, was a cut above the rest ('scuse this pun too). Not a single sour note and cooked beautifully. It was huge and I enjoyed every bite so it just felt wrong to mark down the quality score because of their impatient bang hang mishap.
If I didn't have to choose a different fish and chips spot every week, I could see this as being a place I'd go to if I had a massive hang over.

We had the pleasure of sharing the table with my brother in-law this week arriving fresh from London via the mandatory 2 week quarantine stint. I had initially planned to visit a hit or miss place this week as a sort of fish and chip equivalent of panning for gold, but this risky approach probably isn't the best way to welcome someone back into the country. We chose instead to go with a place with an above average rating on Google maps which granted can be just as risky but I'm pleased to announce that in this case Google reviews didn't disappoint.
It's your typical small town New Zealand branding nightmare of a fish and chip shop. At one stage it probably offered smorgasbord "Chinese food" but now the bain marie is used as a divider between staff and customers. There was a milkshake zone which was taken over by a home stereo playing some very forgettable soft rock. We phoned ahead and our order was waiting for us in a pie warmer which was a detail I lingered on well after leaving the store. I was also drawn to a printed picture of a burger in the window and their almost tasteful use of comic sans around the shop.
The chips were brilliant. Thicker than usual Mr Chip's brand chips, I'd say probably 15-18mm thick cut. Cooked, seasoned, banged and hanged to perfection. The scoop was massive and I kept eating them after feeling full.
The fish was a real thick slab of Warehou. It was almost set up to be a perfect 5 but was unfortunately let down by just 2 undesirable mouthfuls and the thick application of batter was steering me dangerously close to a wall of batter fatigue.
Though not a perfect score, I still enjoyed these and felt great after eating them. It will be joining my very small list of places to recommend in New Plymouth.

There are few things in this world more precious, more fulfilling, more genuinely heart warming than when the person you marry and have been with for most of your life looks you square in the eyes and says those magic words to you, "let's have fish and chips for dinner tonight".
California Takeaways looks so awesome from the outside. The window sign writing, signage and chalkboard menu are pretty pro but it's juxtaposed with a sandwich board painted in white enamel paint with content poorly written in a fine tip vivid.
As soon as you walk inside you're greeted by a drastically different vibe. The walls are absolutely covered with posters of the All Blacks in some bizzare obsessive way that made me feel weird. Like they were trying way too hard to let their customers know that they love rugby. Something was just really off about it.
Behind the counter was about enough space to fit two upright kelvinator fridge freezers and it was impressively occupied by 5 staff members frantically buzzing around getting orders out. A squeaky kid on the register anxiously dealing with customers as a zen uncle up the back was zoning out while working the deep fryers solo. Was good to see that all 5 of them had already implemented masks in the workplace after NZ very recently moved to alert level 2 which has yet to be rolled out at surrounding businesses.
The chips were delicious but there were barely any of them. They could have done with a longer oil drainage time but were good other than that. I just wish there were more of them.
The fish was also delicious but again let down by oil draining and size. It was super thinly sliced.
This place got talked up to me and while yes it was pleasant on the tongue and on the wallet, they were greasy little hold outs to be very honest.

This was a special event. It was a room full of family and friends all together enjoying a Friday night fish and chips feast.
This chip shop was located next to a pub with some terrible number pun for it's name. Upon finding a car park my sister asked if I'd like to pop in for a beer while we waited for the massive order for our tribe. She didn't need to ask me twice.
It was your bog standard fish shop with one kooky twist - the register had a perspex window with an intercom that you used to communicate with the person taking your order. The sign writing in the window stated that they also offer smorgasbord Chinese but the bain marie was used to keep the completed orders warm.
The chips were abundant and quite obviously Mr Chip's brand which you'd think are impossible to mess up but I guess it's nice to be reminded from time to time that nothing is impossible. The chips were inconsistent. Some burnt, some raw, some more limp than your favourite nu-metal band. They were not very well drained of oil but not to a point of being inedible.
The house fish was an underwhelming slice of Warehou. A few mouthfuls of less pleasing flavours and the oiliness left me feeling like I had just made out with a butter mould of my own face.
To be honest it's a little bit disheartening that the bonus of a beer while you wait doesn't really boost these fish and chips out of mediocrity.
